What Have You Done For Body and Soul Today?

This is a question I am trying to ask myself a little more often these days. Granted, it sounds a little cheesy and self-motivational, but in a culture that increasingly encourages laziness both in mind and body and rewards the status quo, I find myself challenged to continue to stay motivated to right-thinking. It’s all too easy to be swept up in TV culture with its fast food and faster information. It’s too easy to go along with the banality of the modern political system. It’s too easy to stick your head in the sand and pretend that nothing is wrong…go back to sleep…

So I’m trying to keep my energy up in bucking the system. We are jettisoning the processed food from our household. We are trying to throw out processed thinking too, but that’s much more difficult. We are trying to focus more on each other and less on ourselves, an equally challenging endeavor. In the midst of it all, is the undeniable realization that we are sinners trying to do all of this. We are incomplete in our makeup and constantly trying to wrest control of our lives from the Creator who gave them. God help us. Fortunately, He doesn’t leave us to ourselves and continues to prick, prod, and sanctify. It’s a good thing too, because half the time, I just can’t seem to keep my act together. I get too caught up in what everyone else should be doing and forget that I can only take part in my own sanctification; I can’t sanctify others. You’d think that would be easy enough to remember but I suppose it’s part of the human condition…it’s always easy to point out everyone else’s flaws without looking at your own.

So, corny as it may sound, I am going to try and remember to ask myself this simple question: what have I done for body and soul today. Lord willing, it will get easier and easier to answer that.

Blessings…
