Vote for…a Republican?
I wrote some time ago now (sorry, as the previous post indicated, I am a proud father of sleepless nights again) I have in mind, for the first time in many years, to endorse a Republican in the upcoming fiasco that is the presidential race. Ordinarily, you couldn’t get me to give the time of day to anyone in either of the duopoly parties. So why the change of heart?
Well, a couple years ago I promised myself and a couple of close friends that there was one man who would get me to vote for a president, that is, if he ever ran. Folks, he is running and I wonder if there may yet be some hope left. His name is Ron Paul and I strongly urge any of you who have the remotest interest in politics to take an interest in this man’s campaign. Paul is a voice in the wilderness. He is a congressman from Texas and has been for a number of terms. He is one of the only people on capitol hill that bothers to speak to the true constitutionality of the things the federal government tries to get away with. He has a way of handing people their heinies on a silver platter. He is bold, articulate, and most of all, seeks to restore us to the one document that was supposed to tie the hands of the American government to keep her from oppressing her people, that is, the Constitution. I don’t know if the man is a Christian or not, but seeing as Christians don’t seem to be that concerned about a president or a government operating with their consciences bound by the Scriptures, I see him as the only shot to actually restoring some sense of credibility and normalcy to this country.
Any Google search on his name will turn up a host of links where you can check him out. He has a number of videos on YouTube of his addresses to congress. Watch a few of them and you’ll see what I mean. He regularly writes articles on the ills of our government and he regularly gets re-elected to his seat in it, which I find encouraging. If this man could operate on a national scale, he would be the closest thing to an honorable president we’ve had since the days of the Founding Fathers. No one is perfect, mind you, but at least there is hope.
So please, please, please check this guy out. If everyone can get word out on Ron Paul’s candidacy, who he is and what he stands for, the man may actually stand a chance in making a splash in the primaries. Check out his appearance in the Republican presidential debate coming up at the Reagan Library on May 3. It is being broadcast on MSNBC and streamed over the web at www.politico.com. You can read more on his position at his official website, www.ronpaul2008.com.
So there is my official endorsement, such as it is. Now, I’m not asking as I normally do, to support and vote for a party you’ve never heard of. I’m not asking you to change a whole bunch of your presuppositions regarding politics. This man is a Republican in the classical sense and one with the conservatism you’ve been looking for. Not the feigned “American values” tripe, mind you, but rather true thoughtful and constitutional polity. Please take the time to check him out and spread the word.
Peace and blessings.
